In the world of design, there is a fundamental called “space, form and structure” that explores the relationship between an empty space, the structure built over it, and the form that is applied to it. However, I would argue that the order should be reversed to “space, structure, and form” as that better reflects the way in which these elements interact.

What is interesting is that this concept of space, structure, and form can be applied to multiple areas beyond just creative arts. It can be seen in music, literature, poetry, and more. However, the concept of structure is often overlooked and undervalued because it is invisible. We can see the space and the form, but the structure is what gives shape and meaning to the work.

It is important to embrace the idea of better structure in any career, whether it be in design or otherwise. The first step is to define the structure of the work, rather than just focusing on how the audience perceives it. For example, a book has a superstructure in the table of contents, but each chapter also has its own structure. In storytelling, the three-act play has a structure that sets the context, defines the conflict, and resolves it.

By prioritizing structure in our work, we can create beautiful and meaningful pieces that have an unshakable foundation. This concept is often overlooked, but it is essential to creating work that stands the test of time. So, let us embrace the power of structure and use it to create amazing work in every field.
